“As a result, there's less of a need for frameworks to actually help users compose these deterministic workflows in a light and shallow manner,” Liu said in an exclusive interview on the VentureBeat Beyond the Pilot podcast. He argues that modern language models no longer require handcrafted orchestration to achieve reliable results.

Background: From Manual Orchestration to Autonomous Reasoning

LlamaIndex has been one of the leading retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) frameworks, connecting private, custom, and domain-specific data to large language models. However, Liu acknowledges that such frameworks are losing relevance as models themselves improve.

With each new release, models demonstrate an increasing ability to reason over “massive amounts” of unstructured data — often surpassing human capability. They can self-correct, perform multi-step planning, and use tools through standard protocols like the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and Claude Agent Skills plug-ins, without needing custom integrations for every tool.

Agent patterns have consolidated into what Liu terms a “managed agent diagram” — a simple harness layer combined with tools, MCP connectors, and skills plug-ins. This replaces the complex, custom orchestration previously required for each workflow.

Coding agents have become so proficient at writing code that developers no longer rely on extensive libraries. Liu revealed that approximately 95% of LlamaIndex code is now generated by AI. “Engineers are not actually writing real code,” he said. “They're all typing in natural language.” The traditional barrier between programmers and non‑programmers is dissolving, because “the new programming language is essentially English.”

Instead of manually coding or struggling to understand API and document integration, developers can simply point tools like Claude Code at a problem. “This type of stuff was either extremely inefficient or just would break the agent three years ago,” Liu noted. “It's just way easier for people to build even relatively advanced retrieval with extremely simple primitives.”

When the scaffolding collapses, what differentiates one AI solution from another? For Liu, the answer is context. Agents need to accurately decipher file formats to extract the right information, and providing higher accuracy at lower cost becomes essential.

LlamaIndex is positioning itself at this new frontier through advancements in agentic document processing, particularly optical character recognition (OCR). “We've really identified that there's a core set of data that has been locked up in all these file format containers,” Liu explained. Ultimately, “whether you use OpenAI Codex or Claude Code doesn't really matter. The thing that they all need is context.”

The collapse of the scaffolding layer means developers can now focus on building rich, context‑aware applications rather than wrestling with integration code.
