The Enduring Promise of the American Dream
The American Dream has long stood as a beacon of hope—the idea that with hard work, fairness, and opportunity, anyone can achieve a better future. Yet, as we step into 2025, this ideal feels more like a pressing question than a guaranteed promise. How can we reshape this dream so that it truly works for everyone, not just a select few? This is the challenge at the heart of a upcoming joint talk at the historic Cooper Union Great Hall, where two individuals from vastly different backgrounds will explore the intersections of democracy, community, and economic mobility.
A Shared Vision for a Better Future
In just 14 days, I will have the honor of joining Colonel Alexander Vindman to discuss what it means to uphold the American Dream today. Alexander’s story is one of unwavering integrity. Born in the Soviet Union and immigrating to the United States as a child, he grew up in Brooklyn before enlisting in the U.S. Army. Over 21 years of service, he earned a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in Iraq and rose to Director of European Affairs for the National Security Council. When faced with the choice to overlook wrongdoing or defend the values he swore to protect, he chose the latter—at the cost of his career, but never his integrity. His journey exemplifies the courage needed to keep the American Dream alive.
Two Paths, One Goal: Civic Duty and Digital Community
My own path has been different, focusing on building digital spaces that encourage fairness and participation. I created platforms like Stack Overflow and Discourse, and I write extensively about how communities function—or fail to function—online. From these experiences, I’ve learned the same principles that apply to running a nation apply to running a forum: clear expectations, fair systems, strong boundaries, and a shared sense of purpose. These principles are essential for creating what I call artifacts for the common good—like local parks that everyone can enjoy together. They’re also the foundation for long-term structural change.
Moving Beyond Individual Generosity to Systemic Change
For too long, we’ve relied on individual acts of generosity to address societal challenges. While important, these efforts cannot substitute for systems that guarantee security, dignity, and opportunity for all. The question we must confront is how to build such systems—foundational changes that create opportunity for everyone, not just the lucky or the well-connected. This is the part of the Stay Gold philosophy I couldn’t fully articulate before, because I was still working to understand it. But now, through conversations like the one with Alexander Vindman, I believe we can identify the key leverage points for change.
