A New Era for Siri in iOS 27
Apple is set to transform Siri into a powerful AI chatbot and agent, positioning it to rival ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. According to a recent Bloomberg report, iOS 27 will introduce a sweeping redesign of the personal assistant, featuring a chat-driven interface and a dedicated Siri app for the first time. The changes focus on deeper integration with the Dynamic Island, enhanced conversational abilities, and expanded third-party chatbot support.
Dynamic Island Becomes Siri’s New Home
When you activate Siri using the wake word or the iPhone’s side button, a pill-shaped animation will appear in the Dynamic Island. For queries or tasks, a transparent results card will overlay the screen. Swiping on this card opens a conversation mode that closely resembles an iMessage chat, complete with small cards for weather, notes, upcoming appointments, and other contextually relevant information. This design ensures Siri remains accessible without taking over the entire display.
A Dedicated Siri App for Conversational History
For the first time, iOS 27 will include a standalone Siri app. It allows users to review past conversations, start new chats, and upload images or documents. The interface features a grid of rectangles summarizing previous chats, a search bar, and a “+” button for initiating new interactions. Users can interact with Siri via voice or by typing directly into the app. This dedicated space makes it easy to revisit previous requests and manage ongoing tasks.
System-Wide “Search or Ask” Bar
Swiping down from the top center of the screen in any app will bring up a system-wide search interface. A “Search or Ask” bar resides in the Dynamic Island, letting you type or speak questions. This feature is similar to Spotlight Search but, according to Bloomberg, will display “more advanced results and additional data from within apps.” It effectively replaces the traditional Spotlight search with an AI-powered assistant that can pull information from the web and Apple Intelligence.
Choose Your Preferred Chatbot
While Siri is the default for the new search bar, tapping on it lets you select other chatbots like ChatGPT or Gemini. Apple plans to allow users to set any third-party AI service as the default for features such as Writing Tools and Image Playground. This expansion beyond ChatGPT integration gives users greater flexibility in how they leverage AI across the system.
Image Playground Gets a Makeover
The Image Playground app is also being overhauled. The interface for generating new images now has fewer controls and includes a “describe a change” option for editing created images. Previously generated images appear in a grid with more rounded edges, and the “New Image” button has been replaced with a “+” icon. Apple has been testing new models that produce more lifelike images, suggesting that iOS 27 could bring significantly enhanced image generation capabilities.
Additional App Updates
Beyond Siri and Image Playground, Apple is planning updates to the Camera, Photos, Wallet, and Shortcuts apps. While details are sparse, these changes aim to further integrate Apple Intelligence across the ecosystem, making the system more proactive and context-aware.
